The hero of F. M. Dostoevsky's story "The Meek" - an unnamed former officer - is offended by all people. He believes that he was not understood and not appreciated. He notes bitterly: “Oh, I was never loved, even at school. I was always and everywhere disliked.” Having become a moneylender, he enjoys the humiliation of the poor who give their last. But this is not enough for him: he marries a sixteen-year-old poor orphan and begins to tyrannize her. Wanting to take revenge on the whole world through the torture of his young wife, the hero gradually loses the pity and tenderness for her that arose at first. Dryness and restraint towards a quiet, silent and meek girl are replaced by anger. He becomes the executioner of his victim, driving her to suicide. And only sitting at the coffin of his wife, the hero realizes that he not only killed her, but also killed himself, that is, he ruined his soul. It's empty and dark, and there's no hope for the best.
F.M. Dostoevsky conveyed the same idea - revenge destroys the soul - through the image of the Meek One in the story of the same name. After all, she also felt a thirst for revenge on her husband for tormenting her. At first, she grins sarcastically in response to him and lets out evil ridicule. But, having lost faith in love, she begins to bear a terrible punishment for her husband - death. The meek woman aims her revolver at her husband, who pretended to be asleep, but she could not kill the man. Now the woman considers herself a criminal. The punishment for her sin was unbearable pangs of conscience and a serious illness. Previously, she was gentle and affectionate, but the desire for revenge tormented and crippled the soul of Meek. By committing suicide, she not only gets rid of her hateful life, but also takes cruel revenge on her husband. But he had almost repented, sought reconciliation with her, asked her forgiveness on his knees. But his cruelty gave rise to a reciprocal feeling of hatred. Vengefulness killed Meek’s faith in another person, hope for mutual understanding and peace in the family.
In concluding my essay, I would like to turn to the wise words of the philosopher Francis Bacon: “A man absorbed in the thought of vengeance does not allow his wounds to heal.” It takes time and patience for these wounds to heal. Revenge, no matter how fair it may be, does not bring satisfaction to a person. We can find confirmation of this in the work of A.S. Pushkin "Dubrovsky". Because of the desire to avenge his father, Vladimir was ready to ruin Troekurov’s estate together with his gang. But he was prevented by his love for Masha, the daughter of his enemy. He realized that he was not capable of causing so much suffering to his beloved and dear person; these feelings were higher than his desire to restore justice. But the lifestyle that the young man led in an attempt to punish all potential culprits in the death of Dubrovsky Sr. deprived him of the opportunity to woo Marya and start a family. The stigma of a robber and constant risks did not go well with marriage. Thus, retribution to the whole world did not give Vladimir either moral satisfaction or the opportunity to forget the grievances and start all over again. The thirst for punishment reduced his entire life to just the hunt for a villain and forever separated him from the woman he loved. This means that revenge is also a force that enslaves a person and brings him to the extreme degree of devastation.
Revenge is a burning thirst for justice, which, nevertheless, is expressed in unjust actions and entails bad consequences. It blinds, forcing people to do things that, with a clear look and a pure soul, they would not do. Then the avenger becomes on the same level as the offender and turns into a new source of evil. Therefore, this feeling should not be encouraged in oneself.

Revenge is a very dangerous social phenomenon. It not only sows hostility and discord in society, but also destroys the personality of the one who carries it out. A man seeks justice, but finds only illusory satisfaction of his thirst for reprisal and the anger that surrounds him on all sides. This is the danger of retribution for those who believe in it. To explain my statement, I will give literary examples.
Maxim Gorky in the story “Old Woman Izergil” created a very revealing character who, being a person with the “eagle instinct,” destroys the humanity within himself. His mother brought the young man to the tribe, but he did not behave as the owners expected from the guest. He killed the elder's daughter, who refused his "addictions." Because of this act of revenge, Larra becomes the embodiment of callousness, arrogance and selfishness for the entire society, people even discussed how best to punish him. Such an act was worthy of the worst fate, in the opinion of those who came to this meeting. Larra was sentenced to eternal exile for his vindictiveness and inability to live in a group. At first the young man did not appreciate the ingenuity of the judges, but then he realized that life in lonely wanderings was torment. When he wanted to die out of despair, even God refused him this. Thus, the thirst for revenge and its cruel embodiment distorted the fate of the hero, making his existence a burden, and not a joy for him.
We can find another example in M. Sholokhov’s epic novel “Quiet Don”. Mishka Koshevoy enlisted in the Red Army and believed in the need for retribution to punish representatives of wealthy families for years of exploitation of the common people. Therefore, he burns down the Korshunovs’ house and kills grandfather Grishaka. The hero is confident that his actions are righteous lynching of those who have long deserved punishment. He longs for social justice and a bright new future where everyone is equal. But what does a man get in the end? Mitka Korshunov kills his family in revenge, neighbors and comrades take up arms against him, even the bride’s family does not want such a relationship. Mishka himself becomes cruel and withdrawn, already threatening a friend and relative - Grigory Melekhov - due to political differences. Apparently, the idea of \u200b\u200brevenge absorbed him completely and completely, and therefore his personality degraded and began to aggressively perceive everything that surrounds it. This negative effect is where the danger of revenge lies.
Thus, revenge is dangerous for the avenger because it destroys his soul and also spoils his relationships with his environment. This phenomenon provokes the emergence of hostility in society and even in the family. A person who relies on vendetta to solve his problems loses greatly from the very beginning, since retribution may not give him satisfaction, but it will definitely ruin his life.
