  • Is generosity a strength or a weakness?

In those ancient times, generosity was the most important act, they imitated it, sang songs about it, wrote poems. And this was completely acceptable. And in our modern society, generosity is considered some kind of weakness or stupidity. And therefore, caring people may be looked at as crazy.

Quite a lot of people are concerned about the question of why this happened, why this concept underwent such a transformation.

From the stories of grandmothers it is clear that before everything was much simpler, namely: houses were not locked, everyone trusted each other, people were much simpler, there was no anger. And if a kind and courageous deed was committed, the price was very huge, because the level of trust was high. In those days, no one was afraid of anyone, the grief of one was the grief of all, and the joy was simply indescribable.

And if in our time the apartment is open for three days, what will happen to it? Surely there will be people who will clean it out. And the person, of course, will worry. So it turns out that 3000 years ago the level of trust was much higher than in modern society. And if a person ends up at a crime scene, the robber will certainly inflict brain injury and may not survive. From this it is clear that generosity is dangerous, and maybe even stupid.

One concept has no meaning at all. One can imagine a completely different situation. A pregnant woman loses consciousness. Some people pass by and don’t pay their precious attention to it at all. But it may not happen at all. You call an ambulance, provide assistance, then this woman’s relatives consider you a real savior. By doing this, you show generosity, and as a result, everyone you know looks at you with generosity; such a feeling in this way will not become stupidity.

Therefore, you should always think with your own head, showing generosity, so that it does not become real stupidity. You shouldn’t be indifferent to other people, it has a detrimental effect. For literally every case there is one correct action that must be applied correctly. And if you think carefully, it is always possible to make the right decision.

It all depends on the current situation. Generosity can be a great strength, or it can be a great weakness. So you need to clearly know when to be generous. There is no need to be a callous person towards the people around you. Remember this, sometimes you just need to be generous.

Arguments on the topic: Revenge and generosity in the novel “War and Peace” (L. N. Tolstoy)

Sometimes life can be extremely difficult and incomprehensible. Unfortunately, there are no instructions for doing the right thing, so questions such as “to forgive or not to forgive?” or “revenge - forget?” become rhetorical. This became the basis for many literary works, in particular, Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy’s epic novel “War and Peace” is entirely imbued with the philosophy of life and issues of human virtue. Therefore, the Many-Wise Litrecon presents a branch of the bank of arguments - a selection for the final essay in the direction of “Revenge and generosity”

  • (Generosity is a real virtue) . The author cultivates generosity in many of the characters in his novel, but one character has it from the very first page. The writer portrayed Natasha Rostova as the embodiment of kindness and selflessness. The desire to provide free help to those in need literally permeates her through and through, her every act is imbued with virtue. One of the most striking examples of this girl’s generosity is the episode with the carts. When the Rostov family was hastily preparing to move from Moscow, Natasha noticed the wounded arriving. Running out into the street and seeing the difficulty of the situation, she, without hesitation, offered her carts to the soldiers. However, not having the right to dispose of family property, she ran in hope to ask for parental permission. Her surprise knew no bounds when her mother refused her request, putting family convenience above the will of those in need. The girl’s kind heart forced her to go against her parents and still allocate carts to the defenders of the fatherland. Some may call this too altruistic, but no one can argue with the fact that Natasha’s act saved dozens of lives. Her generosity is a real virtue.
  • (Showing generosity in forgiveness ). Generosity can manifest itself in different ways, both in helping and in forgiveness. This quality cannot be called innate; it is often formed during life. In a critical situation, it can manifest itself in the behavior of a person who was not previously famous for his kindness and gentleness. From this perspective, generosity is depicted by Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy in his novel “War and Peace.” Andrei Bolkonsky is an exemplary hero of the novel, an intelligent but reserved, loving but secretive man of his word and honor. After the death of his wife Elizabeth, who gave him a son, fate brought the young count together with Natasha Rostova. Their love story was pure and beautiful. However, the lovers had to face a year-long separation. At this time, the young and inexperienced Natasha had to face the difficulties of adult life. Her acquaintance and affair with the tempter Anatoly Kuragin clouded her mind, soon making her ardently regret what happened. Betrayal by his beloved hit Bolkonsky hard. No attempts at repentance from Natasha could eradicate the hatred that had already settled in his heart. But, as they say, time heals. On their last meeting, they were able to talk and understand each other. Natasha’s feelings for Andrey were sincere and strong, just like his for her. With his last breath, Bolkonsky gained strength and managed to forgive the girl. Bolkonsky’s generosity freed Rostova from the mental torment that had been tormenting her all this time.
  • (Generosity - strength or weakness?) Revenge and generosity are two sides of the same coin. Often they overlap, and we have to choose between them. L. N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” is rich in illustrations of life’s difficulties that confront us with such a choice. Pierre Bezukhov is a character with a low degree of self-confidence, led by many of his acquaintances, imprisoned in the idleness of Moscow's cheerful life. Suppressing his opinion and succumbing to outside persuasion, Pierre married Helen Kuragina, although their marriage was doomed from the very first day. Helen’s relationship with her husband did not work out, and she did not strive for it. For her own consolation, she took on a lover, Dolokhov. The officer turned out to be an extremely nasty person who did not miss the opportunity to touch a person to the quick. He didn't even try to hide his affair with a married woman. Unable to withstand such mockery and insults, Pierre challenges Dolokhov to a duel to defend his honor. Succumbing to passion and emotions, he did not realize what he had done. When the duel took place and the count wounded his friend, not a trace remained of his feeling of revenge. He immediately felt sorry for the enemy, and he even began to look for excuses for Dolokhov’s actions. Pierre's feeling of revenge extinguished as quickly as it flared up. It was groundless, caused by provocation. From this we can conclude that revenge is a rather strong feeling, but this does not mean that generosity is the lot of the weak. On the contrary, to overcome strong temptation, you need to have an extraordinary will and the ability to control emotions.
  • (Is it possible to get rid of generosity?) Generosity as a virtue can manifest itself in different ways. Sometimes it manifests itself as a desire emanating from a person to help, and sometimes in accepting and tolerating inappropriate actions towards oneself. Such an example takes place in L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace.” Marya Bolkonskaya is a homely girl, brought up in strict conditions. She was not distinguished by beautiful external features, but internally she was a charming, understanding young lady with high values. She lived all her childhood and youth with her father, constantly hearing insults and humiliation from him. The parent's rudeness towards his own daughter knew no bounds, but Marya generously endured everything and looked after him. Being grateful to him for her life, she allows him to own it completely. Marya had no personal space, she could not express her opinion, she did what her father ordered. Despite internal resistance, she showed kindness to her stern parent, which made her incredibly generous. In the end, Maria hears declarations of love from him, words that were so important to her. Thus, true generosity cannot be eradicated. If it comes from the heart, then no external attacks can destroy it.
