  • Professions

There are many different professions in the world, and everyone chooses their own. One of my friends, when he grows up, dreams of becoming a military man to defend his homeland from enemies. Another wants to become a firefighter to put out fires and save people from burning houses. My neighbor wants to become a singing teacher so she can teach music to children. And I dream of becoming a clothing designer.

What do fashion designers do? They come up with bright images, dresses for women, suits for men, bags, hats, scarves, shawls, belts. Every person always wants to look fashionable and beautiful, but old clothes get boring, so they constantly come up with new collections. There are even special television channels dedicated to fashion. On them you can see beautiful models walking down the catwalk in unusual things created by famous and emerging designers. Spectators sit around the podium and applaud the masters in admiration.

When I grow up, I will first draw and then sew blouses, skirts, vests, trousers, overalls from the best fabrics, so that all people can wear good, cute, comfortable and beautiful clothes. I still love to draw; in my drawings, people, no matter what they do, are always dressed in colorful outfits.

I really like going shopping with my mother, helping her choose clothes for me and for herself. We look at jumpers, shirts, skirts, T-shirts, jackets hanging on hangers or put on mannequins, come up with an image and where you can go in it. Mom says I have taste. This means that I am excellent at combining different items of clothing with each other so that they are in harmony in color and shape, and in addition, they suit the person who is trying them on. I think this will be useful to me to become a good designer when I grow up.

Another important quality for a designer is imagination. I really like to write, I often come up with different stories, fun games, interesting riddles. When I close my eyes, I see a whole carousel of funny characters, each with their own character, appearance, and, of course, a favorite costume. Among them there is a beautiful princess who loves pink and blue dresses, her friend is a gardener, he prefers brown and gray trousers and a shirt that are comfortable for work, a whole palace of guests at a masquerade ball in hats with feathers and colorful dresses covered with sparkles.

I dream of becoming a designer so that I can come up with a lot of different clothes, beautiful and comfortable, so that every person can choose an outfit to their taste. I think people will smile more often when they see themselves and those around them dressed brightly and harmoniously, and then our world will become a little better.

Option 2

As a child, I was often asked: what do I want to study for when I graduate from school? Then the answer was very simple and thoughtless. I wanted to become a doctor or veterinarian to help people or animals. Now I'm older and I take the issue more seriously. A doctor is a responsible profession; the patient’s life sometimes depends on the doctor. So I thought about it and decided that I wanted to become a fashion designer, because I have a great passion for art.

I really like to watch how people look and what they wear. This is a useful skill for a clothing designer, because in the future I will have to understand what not only me, but also society likes.

I know that many people have a problem: what to wear to highlight their figure and hide imperfections. Many designers work with this, and they manage to create interesting styles for different categories of people. I also want to help people so that everyone can choose something to their liking.

Designers often touch upon environmental issues. Many fashion houses think about the fact that any product eventually comes true. This leads to increased pollution of our planet. Therefore, when creating clothes, modern fashion designers adhere to environmentally friendly products. And also, you can often hear about promotions where fashion houses call on people to be more careful about nature.

Besides all this, I am attracted to this profession by the creative and extraordinary flight of thoughts. When creating a dress or an entire collection, you can rely on images not only from your head, but also from the street, from a trip to the cinema, the zoo, books, and so on. Then all this is put together and a thing magically appears that is not like the others.

But besides magic and creativity, there is precise calculation in this profession. You need to understand: how much material will be used for the collection, how to save this material so that the quality does not suffer? For this purpose, the designer is taught to sew and make patterns for future costumes.

I don’t know yet whether I will be able to become a designer or not. But I prepared myself in advance for the fact that I needed to study history, literature, learn to draw well and understand the laws of perspective and construction. All this will help me become what I want in the future.

Create a portfolio and resume

Portfolio is the most important factor influencing the employment of a newcomer. The difficulty of being a designer is that you need to be able to explain and defend every decision you make. And before offering you a test assignment, the employer will evaluate your portfolio and how you defend your design.

At this stage, only practice and diligence will help. The most popular way to get the first project in your portfolio is to come up with a task yourself. Redesign is a great way to train your skills and make yourself known in the professional community: “rebrandings” of global companies are popular on large portals. Check out some successful Behance projects:

  1. Mikhail Glazurin, Facebook redesign concept - more than 15.
  2. Edson Chilundo, Apple Music Redesign - over 35.
  3. Daniel Tan, Daphnie Loong, Starbucks - UI/UX Redesign - over 85.

You can also design your own portfolio website, business card for entrepreneur friends, or come up with your own service.

As soon as the first works appear in your portfolio, you need to prepare a resume and publish it on HeadHunter, SuperJob, 6nomads and other similar portals. Also use your connections - tell them on social networks that you are looking for a job. Among your friends there may well be someone who can help you find a job.

To become a designer, you need to think, study and work a lot. It will be really difficult for you in the early stages. Acquiring design skills is only half the battle. You also need to be able to communicate with people and understand the general principles of business.

Essay on the topic I want to become a fashion designer

The desire to become a fashion designer for me is a conscious decision to participate in the family business. Since Soviet times, my grandmother, mother, aunt, and after retirement, my father, came to this industry.

Women received their education at the Institute of Light Industry in Kyiv.

Now it is a family business. Our atelier is located in a satellite town near Moscow, but we receive orders from different cities of Russia, and not only.

I know about the profession of a fashion designer not from reports about fashion shows or from glossy magazines. This creative, but complex and difficult business requires many qualities from a person. They need to be developed from an early age.

Firstly, it is necessary to improve artistic taste. It is assumed, of course, that it is inherent from birth as the ability to feel harmony in the surrounding life and create images according to the laws of aesthetics.

To do this, I attend art school and, although I do not pretend to be an artist, I study composition, learn to see the proportions of objects, and master the technique of drawing and sketching. I will need this both when entering a university and directly in my work as a fashion designer.

Parents advise getting a profession in the capital, although it would be easier to pass a competition somewhere on the periphery, for example at the Vyatka Polytechnic Institute. Mom gives a convincing example: when she worked after being distributed at the Dnepropetrovsk garment factory, a French company located its branch in one of the workshops. The French were looking for a person to represent their company and announced a competition among specialists. Mom won it thanks to her diploma from the capital’s Kyiv university.

Already now, as a 9th grade student and preparing myself to become a fashion designer, I know that I will not work on shoes or hats, but on women’s clothing. Therefore, I am closely interested in the history of costume, whenever possible I visit exhibitions of clothing and fabrics, go to shows, and even participated in children’s fashion demonstrations several times.

The profession of a fashion designer requires a person to have not only a high aesthetic level, but also the ability to think technically. After all, this is a world of patterns, precise calculations in cutting, the ability to save at all stages of creating clothes without sacrificing quality.

I learn how to achieve technical excellence and success in general from the biographies of famous couturiers. My idols were Yves Saint Laurent, Coco Chanel, Stanislav Zaitsev.

I learn the side of the profession related to patience and communication skills from my loved ones. If they didn’t have these qualities, it’s unlikely that our studio would have so many clients.
