Analysis of the story “First Love”

History of creation

The work “First Love” was written by I.S. Turgenev in 1860. The work is autobiographical and, as the author himself admitted, uses real prototypes of the people around him.

So, for example, the young hero introduces himself to us as Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev; his beloved, like Princess Ekaterina Shakhovskaya; and Pyotr Vasilyevich is designated as the prototype of the father of the great playwright.

It is noteworthy that the love triangle that is present in the story took place in the life of the writer. When the work was published, many condemned Ivan Sergeevich’s frankness, but the author admitted that he did not consider anything wrong with it.

Genre

The genre of the work “First Love” is a story, since there are quite a large number of heroes in the work. In such a genre, there are a number of events related to the development of history and conflict in the work. “First Love” meets these conditions, which is why it is called a story.

The plot of the work

The story tells readers about Vladimir's first innocent and youthful love for Zinaida Zasekina. The girl was incredibly beautiful, educated and smart, and had many fans. But her heart remained unapproachable.

Vladimir and Zinaida became good friends. Occasionally she made fun of the main character and other admirers, until she experienced all this herself. Zina fell in love...

The main characters and their characteristics

  • Vladimir is a young 16-year-old nobleman. A sweet, kind and impetuous young man. He is in love with Zinaida, he is ready to die and do anything for the girl, without a moment’s hesitation. He admires the young lady, tries to spend all his free time with her and remembers all the signs of attention Zina accepted. When the relationship between his father and Zinaida is revealed, at first he does not understand what motivates the girl, and then, looking at the sad, desperately in love face, he begins to admire her, despite her broken dreams. Shows himself as a forgiving and understanding person.
  • Zinaida is a 21-year-old princess. Passionate, impetuous, quick-tempered, with an unbearable thirst for life. He treats Vladimir tenderly, loves him, but like a child. She is in love with Volodya’s father, Pyotr Vasilyevich. Her love, unlike the love of a young man, is adult, desperate, infinitely strong and, unfortunately, doomed to an unhappy outcome. He dies at the age of 25 from an unsuccessful birth, forever retaining truly true feelings for Peter.
  • Pyotr Vasilyevich is the father of the main character. Still a young and very handsome man, powerful, with enormous willpower, rather cold and reserved. He has lost his taste for life due to a boring marriage, but his neighbor’s love for him awakens him again. After a short affair, he abandons, one might say, his mistress to the mercy of fate, since he did not intend to leave his wife because of his wealthy fortune. Dies of a stroke.

Theme of the work

The theme of the work is love. Love that is unique and inimitable for everyone. Vladimir’s love is the first, tender and youthful, without a positive outcome. Zinaida’s love is sacrificial, truly strong and serious, remaining in the girl’s heart forever. The wife's love for Peter, which is non-reciprocal, harshly rejected and humiliated.

Issues

The problem with this work is that love is shown here as an incurable disease, and not a mutual feeling. This love either destroys the moral heroes, or makes them disappointed in themselves and their choices.

Also, another problem is the inexperience of hearts, lack of life experience, so the feelings of both Vladimir and Zinaida do not wait for an answer...

The idea of the work, what does it teach?

Love, no matter what, is a wonderful feeling in all its forms! Love allows a person to reconsider all his actions, improve himself, dream and simply live! This feeling shows how alive and happy a person is.

Any love – the first, still young and childish; and serious, which carries with itself throughout life; and the tragic one, thanks to which a person gains life experience, is truly magnificent and important. Thanks to these feelings, a person becomes a Human, so you should not be afraid to love! These are the main thoughts in the work and this is what it teaches us.

Don't make your partner jealous

One of the main mistakes that most first-time couples make is that they try to “test” their partner's feelings by starting to communicate with another member of the opposite sex. Perhaps making your lover jealous is a good idea to rekindle the fire of feelings. However, this approach only works for adult couples.

How do such games usually end in adolescence? As a rule, the “experimental” begins to suspect his passion for a dissolute life, as a result of which he leaves her. And such a decision is difficult to challenge, because there is every reason to doubt the partner’s fidelity. Therefore, we strongly discourage our young readers from playing with the feelings of their loved ones.

What is the story “First Love” about - plot

Being a forty-year-old respectable man, Vladimir Petrovich V. shared the story of his first love with close friends.

Sixteen-year-old Vladimir lived with his parents at the dacha, where he diligently prepared for the upcoming entrance exams to the university. Soon new guests moved into the neighboring wing - Princess Zasekina and her daughter.

When Vladimir saw the princess, the twenty-one-year-old beauty Zinaida, he immediately fell madly in love with her. He dreamed of meeting her, and soon he had the opportunity to do so.

One day, Volodya’s mother sent him to the Zasekins with an offer to pay a visit. The young man was unpleasantly surprised by the behavior and manners of the princess, while Zinaida behaved impeccably. She talked with Vladimir’s father almost the entire evening, not paying any attention to the young man, and only before leaving asked to pay her a visit.

Vladimir began to visit the Zasekins almost every evening. He fell head over heels in love with Zinaida, but the girl saw him only as a child and did not show any interest in him.

Beautiful, smart, well-educated Zinaida was a great success with men and was always surrounded by fans. Unexpectedly for herself, she fell in love with Vladimir’s father, Pyotr Vasilyevich, who was twenty years older than her. Zinaida's feelings were so strong that she was not afraid to sacrifice her own reputation for the sake of love.

One day, Vladimir became an involuntary witness to a meeting between his father and Zinaida. Their connection shocked the young man to the depths of his soul, but he did not dare to condemn the lovers.

When Vladimir’s mother, and then the entire local society, became aware of the relationship between Pyotr Vasilyevich and Zinaida, a serious scandal broke out, and the Zasekins had to return to Moscow. Before their departure, Vladimir managed to confess his love to Zinaida.

After some time, Vladimir again witnessed a meeting between his father and Zinaida. The girl tried to convince Pyotr Vasilyevich of something, but he responded by hitting her on the hand with a whip. Vladimir was shocked by the reaction of his beloved - she raised her hand to her lips and kissed the mark of the blow.

Vladimir's family settled in St. Petersburg, where the young man entered the university. Six months later, Pyotr Vasilyevich died of a heart attack, having previously received a mysterious letter from Moscow.

After graduating from university, Vladimir learned that Zinaida got married. He wanted to visit her, but kept putting off the meeting. When Vladimir arrived at the address, he found out that his first love died a few days ago during childbirth.

Conclusion

First love strikes on the spot - having neither experience nor understanding of this feeling, young people find themselves defenseless in front of it. This feeling leaves a big mark on the soul, shapes the personality, and establishes an attitude towards the opposite sex.

The author shows how difficult it was for the hero to find his first love, but he endured this difficult test with great dignity.

the main idea

First love is rarely happy, but it is the one that leaves the most powerful memories, painful and at the same time sweet.

The story “First Love” essay

Tale by I.S. Turgenev's "First Love" talks about the inner and secret experiences of a young guy. In addition to love experiences, the work reveals the theme of the relationship between son and father.

The story reflects the author's real experience. “First Love” is a kind of autobiography of I.S. Turgenev. It describes the author's experiences. Volodya, one of the characters in the story, is an exact copy of Turgenev himself.

The author also described the life and character of his father in the work. Turgenev's dad is the prototype of the hero Pyotr Vasilyevich. The character Zinaida Alexandrovna is the author’s first love. She actually existed only under a different name and was the mistress of Turgenev's father.

The author was not afraid to transfer events that happened in real life onto the pages of the book. Therefore, the story turned out to be frank and truthful. Some fans of Turgenev's work criticize and condemn him for being too frank. But the author does not see anything bad in the story “First Love”.

At the center of the work are Volodya’s memories of his first real love. A sixteen-year-old boy goes to the estate with his father. There Volodya first saw Zinaida Alexandrovna. The girl was extraordinarily beautiful. The guy immediately fell in love with her.

Zinaida loves the attention of men, she often flirts with them. The girl has a rather capricious character. She does not hesitate to accept signs of attention and courtship from other men. Not only Volodya likes Zinaida. The girl is in no hurry to make a choice in favor of one of the suitors.

Zinaida does not have mutual feelings for Volodya. She plays with him. Sometimes a girl laughs at a young guy. After a while, Vladimir finds out that Zinaida likes his father. The guy began to observe the development of the relationship between the girl and Pyotr Vasilyevich.

Watching them, Volodya concluded that his father did not take Zinaida seriously. For a man, this is a temporary object of desire. Pyotr Vasilyevich is even thinking about leaving Zinaida soon.

And so it happened. The father, having separated from the girl, decides to leave the country mansion. Arriving home, Peter suddenly dies. After all this, Volodya and Zinaida’s paths diverge, and they stop communicating. But despite this, Volodya is secretly interested in the girl’s life. After some time, he learns that she got married and later died during childbirth.

The work clearly shows that hatred walks alongside love. Turgenev also wanted to show how easily the relationship between a son and father can deteriorate because of love for one woman.

Essay on Turgenev's story

Tale by I.S. Turgenev's "First Love" is, in a sense, an autobiographical work. The writer took the real story of his family as the basis for the work, describing his own youthful love experiences and relationships with his father.

The narration is told on behalf of the main character, Vladimir Petrovich, who is already old and remembers his first youthful love. Love overtook him when, as a 16-year-old boy, he came with his parents to a country estate. Here he meets his first love, an extraordinary beauty, 21-year-old Zinaida Alexandrovna.

The girl's beauty, charm and magnetism attract many fans. However, she treats everyone the same - with ridicule and indifference, not taking anyone seriously. He did not escape the ridicule of Zinaida and Volodya. But, despite the whims of his beloved, the young man is ready to fulfill her every desire in order to win her heart.

With the sensitivity of a lover, Volodya guesses any change in the girl’s mood and her love for an unknown person has not become a secret to him. However, having accidentally learned that Zinaida’s lover is his father, the young man experiences severe mental pain. After all, he understands that his father will never leave his family, since he married his mother for convenience and the scandal is not beneficial to him.

Despite the fact that Vladimir feels sorry for his mother, who is tormented by jealousy, he does not condemn Zinaida, realizing that she has deep feelings for her father, which, perhaps, are true love.

Having seduced and abandoned the girl, Pyotr Vasilyevich leaves and soon dies of a stroke. Zinaida's fate is also tragic. After getting married, she dies during childbirth.

Throughout the entire work, one can feel the author’s kind attitude towards the main character. It is clear that the writer sympathizes with Volodya, his mother, Zina. And Volodya’s father, Pyotr Vasilyevich, feels condemned. He is presented in the work as a cruel, selfish, cold and greedy person.

The author does not say this directly. But this becomes clear from Vladimir’s memories of his father, in which he mentions that he married his mother for convenience, forcing her to suffer from jealousy all her life and treating her coldly and aloofly.

The central theme of the story is a feeling that every person has experienced at least once in their life - love. The author managed to describe this feeling in all its forms: youthful passion, wife’s fidelity, lover’s lust. And no matter what love is, even if it brings devastation and destruction, it is still beautiful, it is impossible to live without it.

Despite the fact that his first love brought suffering to the main character, memories of the emotions he experienced, which helped him understand the meaning and charm of existence, remained in his memory forever.

Take a break if you want to break up

Most teenagers miss out on their happiness just because they don't have enough experience in relationships. They simply do not realize that after a breakup they will feel even more emotional pain than they are experiencing due to the actions of their significant other at the moment. What can we say about the fact that many simply want to “test” their partner’s loyalty in this way.

If you are frankly bored with your relationship with a loved one and you no longer want to have anything in common with him, do not rush to commit a rash act that you may regret. Try simply agreeing on a few weeks break from your relationship with your loved one. As a rule, this time should be enough to realize how significant the feeling of love is.
