The lady decided to marry the drunkard Kapiton to his beloved Gerasim. Deciding that such a woman would be able to discourage the shoemaker from drinking alcohol. And so that Gerasim, in a fit of emotion, would not fight with Kapiton, the butler Gavrila persuaded Tatyana, for fun, to pretend to be drunk. For Gerasim, drunk people were hateful. Seeing Tatyana staggering, Gerasim was shocked. In his world without sound, everything turned upside down. Gerasim spent the whole day in the janitor's room worrying and suffering. And then he resigned himself and stopped paying attention to Tatyana and her husband Kapiton.

A year later, the lady sent Kapiton, who had finally become an alcoholic, and his wife to the village. And then it becomes clear that Gerasim’s feelings have not completely faded away. Having gone to see Tatyana and her husband off, he gave her a red paper handkerchief as a farewell gift. On his way back, Gerasim picked up the puppy. Having fed Mumu for the last time in the tavern, he took her by boat to the middle of the river, tied a stone and threw her into the water. What was going on at that moment in the soul of this unfortunate man is difficult to imagine. When he returned, he packed his things and left for his native village. The lady did not return him, because she was angry with him.

This news becomes a real blow for Gerasim, who is secretly in love with a young defenseless woman. During the same period, he rescues a small dog, to which he gives the nickname Mumu. Gerasim, with all the strength of his big, kind heart, becomes attached to the dog, in which he sees the joy of his joyless life.

There are several climactic moments in the work , and all of them are inextricably linked with the image of Gerasim. The episode of the protagonist's farewell to Tatyana becomes emotionally difficult - it becomes clear that their personal happiness is forever destroyed by the master's whim.

The scene in which Mumu, sold on the orders of the lady, gnaws the rope and returns to her beloved owner, also touches the heart. However, the truly powerful climax of the story is the tragic death of the dog: obeying the whim of a hysterical lady, Gerasim is forced to drown his only true friend.

The denouement is no less sad: Gerasim, without warning anyone, goes to his native village, where he lives out his life as a bob, shunning women and dogs.
