Part 1
The girl Feride lived happily with her parents in a military garrison; her dad was a career officer. The little girl lived carefree, fought with boys, jumped on trees, for which she received the nickname King Bird.
When his wife died, his father decided to take Feride to her rich relatives. The aunt had a spoiled daughter, Nedjmie, and an adult son, Kamran.
A neighbor, the widow Neriman Khanum, often came to visit her aunt. One day Feride accidentally heard declarations of love between Kamran and a widow. Frightened by publicity, Kamran asked the girl not to divulge his secret.
The girl was sent to study at a ladies' boarding school. Considering Feride’s impudent and quarrelsome character, living in an educational institution was not easy for her. Kamran often visited his cousin at the boarding house, and the girl assured her friends that she and Kamran had a romantic relationship.
While on vacation with her second aunt, Feride boasted to her cousin about her fictional novel. Kamran unexpectedly appeared as a guest. The chatty cousin immediately told Kamran about the conversation with Feride. The young man decided to support the eccentric Feride and proposed to her. It was decided to hold the wedding after the girl’s graduation, and during this time Kamran went to work abroad.

Part I
The main character, Feride, was left without a mother at the age of six. Her father was a military officer, and the girl spent her early childhood in the barracks. After the death of his wife, the father took his daughter to Istanbul, to the relatives of his late wife, who belonged to one of the richest families in the city. Anticipating his death, he sent the girl to a French Catholic boarding school. Accustomed to living among the military, Feride was completely unaccustomed to social manners: she climbed trees and threw stones no worse than boys, but Feride’s numerous relatives doted on the orphan, and the little prankster got away with everything. Because Feride loved to jump through the trees from branch to branch, she received the nickname Chalykushu - the king bird. Aunt Besime took the greatest part in Feride’s upbringing. Her children - son Kamran, who was much older than his cousin, and daughter Nedzhmie - were the complete opposite of Feride. Kamran, a pampered, spoiled young man, and Nedzhmie, who would not leave her mother’s lap, irritated Feride.
Aunt Besime's house was visited by the beautiful twenty-five-year-old widow Neriman Khanum. Everyone admired this woman and sympathized with her grief: losing her beloved husband at such a young age. Only Feride was disliked and irritated by the widow. She did not believe in the sincerity of her feelings and believed that Neriman was wearing mourning only because the color black suited her very well. Feride also did not understand the purpose of the widow’s visits. Neither the aunts nor young Nedzhmie were suitable for her as a friend. But Feride soon realized that Neriman, in anticipation of a profitable match, had targeted twenty-year-old Kamran as her victim. One day, by chance, while at home on vacation, Feride caught a couple declaring their love. Unable to contain her anger, Feride laughed loudly. After that, Neriman did not appear in the house again, and Kamran ingratiatingly begged his cousin not to tell anyone about what she saw. Fearing that Feride would not keep his word and would blab about his affair with Neriman Khan, Kamran began to shower Feride with gifts. Seeing this, the relatives decided that Kamran was caring for his young cousin.
Returning to the boarding house after the holidays, Feride discovered that all her friends had acquired boyfriends and were laughing at her. Chalykushu did not understand anything about the relationship between a man and a woman. Feride spent the next holidays in Tekirdag, with another aunt. A beautiful girl from a wealthy family in the capital created a sensation in a small town. Local young people even began to woo her. Cousin Myuzhgyan, Feride’s most beloved relative, suffering from her ugly appearance, deep down envied her. Once Feride let Myuzhgyan know about her fictitious romance. The stranger came to Feride on behalf of her friend Munnever. After an unsuccessful romance, Munnever fell ill and went to Europe for treatment. There she met Kamran, they began a close relationship. At school, Feride began to sympathize with the modest girl Munisa. One day she found out that the girl was being bullied both at home and at school. It turned out that Munise’s mother, because of unhappy love, became a fallen woman, and the villagers believed that the daughter should be responsible for the actions of her mother.
The girl did not agree with the injustice towards the child and obtained custody of her from Munise’s relatives.
Suddenly letters from Kamran began to arrive, which Feride burned without reading, but one day her gaze fell on the surviving lines about how he misses her.
The village authorities decided to close the school. Feride and her adopted baby had to move to a small town in southern Turkey. The young teacher managed to get a job at the school. The head of the educational institution appreciated the beautiful woman and began to show sympathy for her. He was a deeply ill man and died soon after. Evil tongues began to blame Feride for his death, Korolek decided to leave again.
Part 3
Feride began working at a school located in a military town. The beautiful young woman was immediately noticed and had many fans. One of them was a young officer, a relative of the pasha. Feride could not answer the young man’s feelings, because her heart still belonged to Kamran.
At school, Feride became friends with Nazmie, who was shunned by all her colleagues. One day, Nazmie invited Feride to visit her, where the noble colonel liked the beauty. At the height of the evening, the girl realized that she was not called by chance, but to please the ladies' man-colonel. She hurriedly left the dinner party. In the morning, Feride told everything to the school principal, and she told her about the vile entity Nazmie, who has influential patrons in the city.
The headmistress decided to save Feride and sent her to her friend’s school, located on a distant island.
Arriving on the ship, Feride was given a bouquet, and the girl learned about the duel between an officer loyal to her and a riotous colonel. The young military man stood up for the offended teacher, but thanks to the intervention of the rich pasha, he escaped punishment. With great warmth Feride remembered the man in love with her, and when the roses withered, she put a few petals in her diary.

Soon, Feride found a job in the military town of Ch. The beautiful girl immediately became the object of attention of local men, and marriage proposals rained down on her. One of the contenders turned out to be Lieutenant Iskhan, the Pasha’s nephew. But the handsome, noble young man was also refused. At school they looked askance at the teacher who enjoyed such attention from men. Feride now has a friend, Nazmie, who for some reason was not liked at school. One day, Nazmiye invited Feride to a party hosted by her fiance's aunt. At the party, Feride was noticed by Colonel Bukhhardin. Realizing that she had been lured into a trap and breaking out of there, Feride ran to the headmistress of the school for advice. She sympathized with the girl: Nazmie is a very vile person. She has been luring girls into such networks for a long time, but she has enough patrons and it is impossible to get rid of her. The headmistress gave Feride a letter of recommendation to her friend - he is the director of a school on the island of Kusadasi, he will help her.
Before sailing, a bouquet of roses was brought to Feride’s cabin. Feride is perplexed: from whom? On the ship, from a conversation between two military men sailing with her, Feride learned that Lieutenant Iskhan challenged Colonel Bukhkhardin to a duel, standing up for the honor of the teacher. The connections of Iskhan’s uncle, the pasha, and the residents’ dissatisfaction with Bukhhardin’s debauchery saved Iskhan from serious punishment; he escaped with a small penalty. Now Feride understood who the flowers were from, and as a sign of gratitude she kept the petals of these roses in her diary.
Part 4
Arriving at a new place, Feride had to look for work again, because the director’s friend turned out to be sick and could not help her. The girl got a job as a governess to teach two daughters of a local rich man.
Once attending a dinner party with her students, Feride was shown a family album. It contained photographs of Kamran. The owner of the house said that the young man was in severe depression after his bride ran away from him before the wedding, but now he is happy in his new marriage.
The owners of the house sharply condemned the girl who abandoned Kamran and Feride, fearing that she would be recognized, refused to work. Soon the war began, the girl began to work in the hospital. The head doctor of the hospital accepted Feride as his own daughter and looked after her in everything. Among the soldiers who were treated, Feride met an officer who fought a duel over her. His face was severely disfigured after the injury. Feeling sorry for the young man, Feride invited him to take her as his wife. The noble military man did not accept such a sacrifice and returned to the front.
Suddenly Munise died from a viral disease. Feride, who was grieving the death of her baby, had a nervous breakdown. The chief doctor took her to his house, which caused gossip among the townspeople. A few years later, by chance, Kamran met Feride again at his mother’s house. At that time he was already a widower; his wife died after the birth of their son. He got married to spite Feride, since he had heard rumors about her numerous affairs. Seeing his beloved woman again, Kamran tried to restore his previous relationship with Feride, but the girl stopped all his attempts, saying that she was happy in her marriage.
On one of Feride’s last evenings at her aunt’s house, her cousin told Kamran that the girl had given him a package. She told him about the recent death of her husband Feride and her oath to her husband. Feride promised to make peace with her relatives and also give Kamran a package. Feride's marriage was fictitious; her husband took this step only to protect her from bad rumors. In addition, he knew that he was terminally ill and had little time left to live. In the package, the young man found Feride's diary, which her husband secretly took from her. Having read all her thoughts and experiences, he realized that there was no person more precious to him in this world.

Seyfettin Bey, having learned about this, is very upset and worries about his careless daughter. Neriman, having learned about the upcoming wedding of Feride and Kamran, makes attempts to prevent the lovers, again turning to Selim for help. Having heard dirty gossip about Kamran’s secret meetings with the widow Neriman, Feride, although she refuses to believe them, nevertheless, a seed of doubt settles in her soul. She is very afraid of losing her loved one. Despite the fact that Kamran and Feride love each other dearly, Chalykushu maintains his distance and constantly runs away from his lover. Kamran begins to suspect that Feride simply does not love him. Seyfettin Bey, having learned about his son's problems, wants to speed up preparations and hold the engagement as soon as possible.
