- Based on the comedy The Tradesman in the Nobility by Molière
This work was written by Jean-Baptiste Molière, who in his creative career wrote many wonderful and interesting comedic stories. In them, he tried to show such human vices as laziness, pride and arrogance as very base and shallow concepts that force a person to make a number of mistakes, leading to comical situations. In this comedic work, the writer draws the reader’s attention to the fact that there is no need to strive to change oneself in order to be someone else. It is much more important to “find and know yourself” in order to further understand the essence of those things that can bring a person joy and happiness into his life.
Jourdain, being the main character of the work, has all the benefits of human life - he has a family, he is healthy and rich. However, this becomes not enough for him, and he decides to gain the status of a nobleman, which he does not have. He becomes incredibly obsessed with this idea, and does everything possible to implement it. Also, he becomes a victim of scammers who are trying to earn a considerable amount of money from him, saying that they can help him achieve this status. In addition, his acquaintance Dorant invites a lady named Dorimena to a dinner party, which should take place in the main character’s house. Jourdain instructs Dorant to give the gift to Dorimena, but he does this on his own behalf, because this lady is not indifferent to him. After which we get an incredibly inconvenient and unpleasant situation, where the lady is perplexed by the fact that Jourdain talks about the gift as something insignificant. She categorically disagrees with him, considering him a tactless and uncultured person who is capable of making such daring conclusions.
When Cleon asks the main character to let him marry a girl named Lucille, who is Jourdain’s daughter, he is refused, since the young man does not belong to a noble family. However, the wise Cleon comes up with the idea of dressing himself in expensive things in order to emphasize the significance of his family. After this cunning trick, he still manages to marry the girl and find happiness in family life. The essence of the work is that it is not so important what a person looks like, what is more important is what he is as a person.
