Alexander Pushkin "Dubrovsky"

Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin was not just a poet, he was a writer. Prose in his work was inferior to poetry in quantity, but not in quality. Of course, it was poetry that brought him fame, but such were the times and customs of those years.

A fairly famous work of Pushkin written in prose is “Dubrovsky,” a story about a showdown between landowners, in which revenge and love are mixed. All this, of course, sounds good on paper, but it all reads poorly. It’s not for nothing that “Dubrovsky” is considered an unfinished work.

Reading Dubrovsky, one gets the strong feeling that Pushkin wrote all this for some young lady for whom he had certain feelings. Otherwise it is difficult to explain such excessive simplicity and lack of depth in the work. In principle, the thesis that it is not finished has a right to exist, but then the events that took place in “Dubrovsky” are just a prologue to something more.

The plot is based on the confrontation between the landowner Troekurov and the landowner Dubrovsky. One is rich and evil, the other is poor, but the peasants love him. But Dubrovsky dies and his estate goes to Troyekurov. Dubrovsky, who is the father of the main character named Vladimir, dies of course.

The younger Dubrovsky becomes a robber with his peasants and engages in robbery, simultaneously coming up with a plan to take revenge on Troekurov. As a result, the plan was invented and almost executed, but Dubrovsky falls in love with Troekurov’s daughter and renounces his revenge. Now our hero wants to win his daughter because he is in love, but old prejudices interfere with the lovers. Well, after this, the work ends with a raid on Dubrovsky’s robbers. That's all. End. There is nothing instructive, particularly interesting or original in the work, except for one plot twist. Although “Dubrovsky” would be suitable for a modern school.

Despite the fact that the work is already two centuries old, it is easy to read, with the exception of the trial between Dubrvosky and Troekurov. Maybe it was interesting for the mid-nineteenth century, but it looks and reads somehow cumbersome and difficult. But then Pushkin writes in his standard manner and does not forget to remind the ladies what might intrigue them, and that he knows French.

In principle, a love story with an unsuccessful ending is absolutely not new, even for that time, but Pushkin chose an interesting reason for the break between Masha Troekurova and Dubrovsky. In general, Robin Hood and Romeo and Juliet mixed up in Dubrovsky. There is almost no smell of the Russian spirit here. So the work is not only unfinished, it is not even finalized.

It is difficult to single out any separate criteria for evaluating such a small work, so all that remains is to discuss the characters and the description of the world, because there is nothing else.

Dubrovsky is not a typical hero for Pushkin, although at first the author imagined him as such. But then Vladimir took the path of a noble robber, shrouded in an aura of mystery, which gives him a romantic charm, which society ladies were often seduced by. To give up revenge for the sake of love, what could delight a lady more?

The antagonist here is Troekurov. In principle, the standard image of a landowner of those times. Greedy, arrogant, with a bad sense of humor. His only plus is his beautiful daughter Masha. Of course, only this plus helps Troekurov remain with his estate.

Well, Mashenka seemed at first to be a weak, weak-willed girl, but in the finale her character suddenly awakened. Of course, such a denouement of relations in our time looks very stupid even on paper, but the discount on the nineteenth century compensates for this. Pushkin did not write for you and me. And for pretty young ladies.

Pushkin did not bother here with the description of the so-called Russian spirit either. In every sense, this is probably the weakest work of the recognized genius of Russian literature. Any of his poems convey more sensations than the entire “Dubrovsky”, even if it is not finished. Here our great poet has sketched the echoes of serfdom that are often present in the rest of his major works. It turned out well to convey the spirit of the elusive robber.

“Dubrovsky” is an unfinished and simply undeveloped work. It is worth reading only if you have a desire to get acquainted with the entire work of Alexander Sergeevich.

History of creation

When Alexander Sergeevich heard from his friend the poet Pavel Nashchokin a fascinating story about a bankrupt landowner named Ostrovsky, he realized that it could be taken as the basis for a future novel.

According to Nashchokin’s recollections, he once met in the prison a young Belarusian nobleman who became the victim of a corrupt judge. For a long time he sued his neighbor over land, but as a result he was expelled from his own estate without a penny in his pocket. Having gathered his serfs, the landowner organized a real band of robbers and began to trade in robberies.

In the fall of 1832, Pushkin began work on a new novel and in a short time wrote two parts out of the planned three. The second volume was completed in February 1833, but the third, for some reason, was never started.

The novel was published only in 1841, 4 years after the tragic death of Alexander Sergeevich in a duel.
Since the writer never had time to give a title to his work, the editors called it “Dubrovsky.” The meaning of the name is quite simple - that was the name of the main character of the novel.

About the product

“Dubrovsky” (1833, published in 1841) is an uncertified story by Pushkin. The main themes are the defenselessness of honest poor people before corrupt justice, the conflict between fathers and children, and the defense of their own honor.

Reviews

Dubrovsky, despite all the skill that the author discovered in his portrayal, still remained a melodramatic person and did not arouse participation. In general, this whole story has a strong melodramatic feel. But there are wonderful things in it. The ancient life of the Russian nobility, represented by Troekurov, is depicted with terrifying fidelity. Clerks and legal proceedings of that time also belong to the brilliant aspects of the story. But the best thing is the character of the heroine, predominantly a Russian woman. A solitary life and French novels greatly developed in her not feelings, not passions, but fantasy - and she truly considered herself a heroine, ready to make any sacrifice for the one she loved. As long as she only had to play at the novel, she did all kinds of crazy things; but it came down to it - and she set about morality and virtue. To be kidnapped by a robber lover at the altar, where she was forcibly dragged to marry a depraved old man, seemed very “romantic” to her, and therefore extremely tempting. But Dubrovsky was late, and she was secretly happy about this and played the role of a faithful wife, therefore, again a heroine.

"Dubrovsky" and especially "The Captain's Daughter" should be called the best of Pushkin's prose stories. “Dubrovsky” depicts the life of our landowners at the beginning of this century, and “The Captain’s Daughter” depicts the era of the Pugachev rebellion, the history of which Pushkin was studying at that time.

Under the external gloss and Western European dress of the nobleman, the features of an old Russian boyar were visible, who at the head of his household fought against their neighbors. Pushkin, with his keen historical sense, on the one hand, could not help but see this archaism, which was embodied in a hidden form in his text; on the other hand, the image of a gentleman robber, a wanderer, did not allow him to reveal the thoughts that deeply worried him about the historical mission of the nobility and its place in Russian society, already embodied in “Yezersky”. The logic of literary creativity pushed Pushkin to search for the most reliable forms of depicting reality in prose texts. Having barely finished the XIX chapter of the novel, on February 7, 1833, Pushkin applied for permission to familiarize himself with the archival documents on the Pugachev case, and in “The Captain's Daughter” a different theme is built - the stoic resistance of the enlightened nobility to the chaos of rebellion.

Subject

Alexander Sergeevich raised many important topics that have not lost their relevance today. The central theme of Dubrovsky is the defense of human dignity. Thriving corruption in government bodies has crippled the fates of many people. Old man Dubrovsky became a similar victim, who, due to his poverty, was unable to defend his honor and dignity in court.

Vladimir saw the only way to protect the honor of his family name only in taking revenge with his own hands, without relying on the letter of the law. In fact, he was forced to take the criminal path; he simply had no other choice. This greatly saddens the author, who understands that in Russia an honest but poor person is absolutely powerless.

The main idea of the novel is the lack of equality between representatives of the same social class, the difference between whom was only in their financial situation. The author comes to a disappointing conclusion: the law always stands on the side of wealth, while noble, honest and progressive people, such as Vladimir, find themselves on the sidelines of life.

The writer also paid a lot of attention to the problems of family lawlessness - the crippled fate of children forced to submit to their parents' will. Troekurov, despite the tears of his 17-year-old daughter, gave her in marriage to an unloved old man, whose main advantage was wealth and position in society.

To remain a man of honor, to be merciful and fair - this is what the work teaches. It is very important to be able to find compromise solutions and listen to each other in order to prevent possible conflicts and tragedies from arising. And in any conditions remain an honest, noble person. This is the idea of the novel - to strive for mutual understanding in society, forgetting about one’s own egoism.

Composition

The composition of the novel is distinguished by a clear chronology of plot lines. In the exposition, the author introduces the reader to the characters and the setting in which the events will develop. Descriptions are given of the two main characters - the landowner Kirill Petrovich Troekurov and his close neighbor Andrei Gavrilovich Dubrovsky.

The plot of the work is a quarrel between neighboring landowners, which quickly develops into a serious conflict. Troekurov bribes the judge and takes away his Kistenevka estate from Dubrovsky. Having learned the judge's verdict, Dubrovsky suddenly lost his mind and died a while later.

Next comes the development of the plot . Having learned about what happened, Dubrovsky’s son, guards cornet Vladimir, arrives from St. Petersburg. He gathers his serfs and sets fire to Kistenevka, and then becomes a robber, terrifying the local landowners.

Wanting to take revenge on his main offender, Troekurov, Dubrovsky, under the guise of a teacher, ends up in his house. But his plans are ruined by the charming Masha Troekurova, with whom he falls passionately in love. However, the happiness of young people is impossible - Troekurov has already wooed Masha to the old rich man.

At the climax of the novel, Dubrovsky hurries to rescue his beloved from a hated marriage, but does not have time: Masha is already engaged and, having taken an oath of marital fidelity, is forced to stay with her unloved husband. With this act, Masha gives a lesson in nobility to Vladimir Dubrovsky.

The denouement of the novel is the dissolution of the bandit gang and Dubrovsky’s departure abroad.
