The battle with Karabas and the mystery of the canvas

Pinocchio meets Pierrot, who has escaped from Karabas, and takes him to Malvina’s house. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the owner of a puppet theater appears with two police bulldogs. He wants to take the dolls back to captivity. Friends have no choice but to join the fight.

Pinocchio told Malvina and Pierrot to run away and, together with Artemon, took up the fight. Forest inhabitants came to the aid of the heroes. In the end, the dolls won.

The defeated Karabas and Duremar went to the nearest tavern to lick their wounds. Pinocchio followed them and hid in a jug to find out the secret of the golden key.

During the meal, adventurers Alice and Basilio appear in the tavern. They make Karabas a tempting offer - for 10 gold pieces they tell him where Pinocchio is hiding. He agrees, and the scammers point to the jug. The Doctor of Puppet Science immediately breaks the vessel, but the wooden hero manages to escape riding on a rooster.

Pinocchio finds out that his friends have been arrested, he rushes to the rescue and miraculously frees everyone. Here, all the negative characters, led by Karabas, appear on the path of the heroes. Papa Carlo comes to the rescue. He takes all the dolls and takes them to his closet.

Pinocchio tells his friends about the secret of the canvas hanging on the wall and tears it off the wall. There is a secret door that opens with a golden key. Behind it is an underground passage leading to a fabulous dream theater.

The epilogue of the work tells about the first comedy staged in the new theater - this is “The Extraordinary Adventures of Pinocchio and His Friends.” All the dolls run away from Karabas and begin to perform together on the same stage.

A very brief summary for a reader's diary

The organ grinder Carlo carved a boy with a long nose, Pinocchio, from a log. The wooden naughty boy immediately began to play mischief, and the talking Cricket advised him to behave well and go to school.

Dad Carlo dressed and shod his son and bought him the alphabet. But Buratino did not make it to school, but went to a performance at a puppet theater.

He was caught by the theater director Karabas Barabas. Having learned that in Papa Carlo's closet there was a canvas with a painted hearth hanging, he gave Pinocchio five gold coins so that old Carlo would not die of hunger and would not leave the closet. The fox Alice and the cat Basilio wanted to take these gold coins from Pinocchio. Escaping, Pinocchio found himself in the house of Malvina, who had escaped from the theater of Karabas Barabas.

The bat brought Pinocchio to the Land of Fools. There, on the advice of the fox and the cat, Pinocchio buried the gold ones, hoping that in the morning a tree with coins instead of leaves would grow.

The fox complained to the policeman that Pinocchio was a thief, and he ordered him to be thrown into the pond. And the fox and the cat dug up the coins and divided them among themselves.

Pinocchio met Tortila the turtle in the pond. She gave him a golden key to some door behind which there would be happiness.

With the help of cunning, Pinocchio managed to find out from Karabas Barabas that the door was in Papa Carlo's closet.

After many adventures, Pinocchio led dad Carlo and his friends - Piero, Malvina and the poodle Artemon - behind a secret door. There they found a puppet theater and began to play for people a play about the adventures of Pinocchio.

Failed trip to school

Pinocchio promises his father that he will go to school and learn to read. For this, Carlo sells his only jacket and buys the ABC. On the way to school, the boy hears music and rushes to the puppet theater. To purchase a ticket, he without hesitation sells the alphabet and ends up in a performance called “The Girl with Blue Hair, or Thirty-three Slaps.”

The actors call the long-nosed fidget, and he instantly jumps onto the stage. However, the owner of the theater quickly removes the tomboy, threatening him with a whip. The Doctor of Puppet Science plans to use him as firewood, but relents and listens to the hero's story. Having learned about a canvas with a fireplace hanging on the wall of the closet. Karabas sends Pinocchio home and orders him to take 5 gold pieces to his father on the condition that he will not sell his closet.

Brief summary (more detailed than summary)

The old carpenter Giuseppe lived on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. One day he began to cut a log with a hatchet, and immediately a thin voice squeaked so that it would not pinch. The carpenter guessed that this voice came from the log.

Giuseppe gave the talking log to his friend, the old organ grinder Carlo. He advised him to carve a doll out of a log, teach it to dance and sing, and give performances with it in order to earn bread.

Carlo in his closet cut out a boy from a log and named him Pinocchio. Pinocchio's nose suddenly began to grow and became very long and sharp.

When Carlo made Pinocchio's legs, he jumped out the door and ran down the street. Carlo rushed after him and shouted: “Hold him!” The policeman caught the wooden man, and Papa Carlo wanted to put Pinocchio in his pocket. But he fell and pretended to be dead. Everyone thought that the organ grinder had beaten the boy to death, and the policeman arrested Carlo. And Pinocchio ran into the closet and saw the Talking Cricket there. Cricket advised him to listen to Papa Carlo, not to run away from home without anything to do, and to go to school. But Pinocchio drove him out of the closet.

When the boy got hungry, he stuck his nose into the pot that hung over the fire of the hearth. Pinocchio's nose was pierced by the bowler hat, because it was just a picture painted on canvas.

The rat Shushara crawled out from under the floor. Pinocchio pulled its tail, and the rat wanted to gnaw his throat. But then Papa Carlo came and drove her away.

He fed his son an onion. Pinocchio promised to become smart and prudent and said that the Talking Cricket told him to go to school.

Then dad Carlo made clothes and shoes for his son. Buratino asked how he would go to school without the alphabet. Papa Carlo sold his jacket and bought him the alphabet.

In the morning Buratino rushed to school, but heard cheerful music and turned to the puppet theater. To buy a ticket to the show, Buratino sold the alphabet to some boy.

A comedy written by Karabas Barabas was played in the puppet theater. This play was considered funny because Harlequin, talking with Pierrot, beat him all the time.

Suddenly the dolls saw Pinocchio in the hall, called him over and began to sing “Polka Bird”. The owner of the theater Karabas Barabas was angry that Pinocchio interfered with the performance and hung him on a nail in the pantry.

A roast was roasting on the hearth. Karabas Barabas decided to throw a wooden Pinocchio on the fire, since there was little wood in the hearth. But Pinocchio said that he could not climb into the hearth, since he had already tried to do this, but only poked a hole in the hearth.

When Karabas Barabas found out that the canvas with the painted hearth was hanging in old Carlo’s closet, he let Pinocchio go. Having given the wooden boy five gold coins for Carlo, Karabas Barabas asked him to tell the organ grinder not to die of hunger and not to leave the closet.

Pinocchio ran home, dreaming that he would buy dad Carlo a jacket. He met two beggars: Alice the fox and Basilio the cat, who was pretending to be blind. Having learned that Pinocchio was running to Papa Carlo, the fox said that the organ grinder was very ill from cold and hunger. Then Pinocchio showed her five gold pieces and said that he would buy a jacket for Papa Carlo with them.

The Fox said that if Pinocchio wants to have ten times more money, they will take him to the Land of Fools on the Field of Miracles. There you need to put the money in the hole, saying a spell. In the morning a tree will grow with gold coins instead of leaves. Pinocchio happily agreed to go to the Land of Fools.

On the way there, they refreshed themselves at the Three Minnows tavern and went to bed there. At night, the fox and the cat quietly left, and Pinocchio had to give one gold piece for dinner. He ran along the road, and suddenly he was attacked by robbers with bags on their heads. While running away, Pinocchio put four gold pieces in his mouth. The robbers grabbed him and began to search his pockets.

Pinocchio trembled with fear, and the coins began to jingle in his mouth. The robbers could not get the money because Buratino clenched his teeth tightly.

The boy managed to escape. He rushed into the lake, grabbed the sleeping swan by the paws, and the bird flew across the lake. On the other side, Pinocchio released the swan's paws, ran and saw a house. There the robbers overtook him. They hung him upside down on a tree so that the gold would fall out of his mouth, and they themselves went to look for a roadside tavern.

Malvina, a doll with blue hair, lived in the house. She escaped from the theater of Karabas Barabas. She was guarded by the poodle Artemon.

In the morning Malvina saw Pinocchio hanging. Artemon called the ants, they gnawed the rope, and the poodle picked up Buratino and carried him into the house. When Pinocchio woke up, Malvina persuaded him to swallow castor oil, which Doctor Owl advised him to give.

Pinocchio slept until the morning and woke up healthy. At breakfast, Malvina began to teach him how to behave at the table, and then forced him to write a dictation. Pinocchio stuck his nose into the inkwell and put a blot on the paper. The girl was upset that he was playing naughty, and told Artemon to take Pinocchio to the closet.

A bat helped him get out of the closet and called him to run after it to the Land of Fools. She led him to the fox Alice and the cat Basilio. They took Pinocchio to a vacant lot. There he buried the gold and sat down to wait for the tree to grow.

The fox ran into the city and complained to the police bulldog that there was a thief sitting in the vacant lot. He sent Doberman Pinscher detectives, who grabbed Pinocchio and dragged him to the police station. And the fox and the cat dug up the gold coins, fought over them and left the city.

The policeman on duty decided to drown Pinocchio in the pond because he was homeless, unemployed and without a passport. The detectives threw the boy into the pond.

Buratino did not drown because he was made of wood. Tortila the turtle explained to him that the money was stolen by a fox and a cat. She gave him a golden key and said that they needed to open some door and it would bring happiness.

Pinocchio swam out of the pond and ran off into the air. Then a hare crossed the road, being chased by dogs. Pierrot fell off the hare. He said that the dogs were not chasing the hare, but him. The dogs were hired by Karabas Barabas.

It turns out that Piero heard the leech seller Duremar and Karabas Barabas talking about the golden key that Tortila the turtle kept. Karabas Barabas immediately prepared to go to the pond, but saw that Pierrot was eavesdropping and chased after him along with Duremar. And Pierrot fell on the hare in the dark, grabbed him by the ears, and they rushed off.

When Piero learned from Buratino that Malvina lived nearby, he was very happy. He loved her and wrote poetry to her. When they arrived at Malvina’s house, she immediately began to educate them: she told them to wash and brush their teeth before breakfast.

The toad came and said that at night Tortila the turtle lost his mind and told Karabas Barabas everything about the golden key. The toad also said that Karabas Barabas and the police dogs were coming here. Then Pinocchio loaded Artemon with bundles with the necessary things, and put Malvina on them, and Pierrot ordered him to hold on to the poodle’s tail, and they set off.

When we went out into the field, Karabas Barabas looked out from the forest. He saw the fugitives and unleashed the dogs on them. Pinocchio shouted for Pierrot and Malvina to run to the lake, and for Artemon to get ready for a fight. And he climbed a pine tree and shouted at the top of his lungs for animals, birds and insects to save the wooden men.

Artemon dodged the bulldogs, and Pinocchio threw heavy cones at Karabas Barabas.

Birds flew in to help, animals and insects came running and helped Artemon cope with the bulldogs.

Pinocchio noticed that the tip of Karabas Barabas's beard stuck to the resinous trunk of the pine tree. The boy jumped to the ground and began to run around the tree. Karabas Barabas ran after him, and his beard was wrapped around the trunk. When Karabas rested his nose against a pine tree, Pinocchio stuck out his tongue at him and rushed to the lake. Behind him walked the shabby Artemon.

Pinocchio, Piero, Malvina and Artemon went to the other side of the lake and made a stop in a cave under the roots of a pine tree to bandage Artemon’s wounds.

They rested, ate, and then heard that Duremar and Karabas Barabas passed by, looking for the fugitives. These gentlemen got hungry and wandered to the tavern of the Three Minnows. Buratino also ran there. He wanted to find out from Karabas Barabas where the door that the golden key opens is located.

He managed to sneak into the tavern unnoticed and climb inside a large jug.

When Karabas Barabas and Duremar had eaten and the drunken Karabas began to sing a song, Pinocchio, sitting in a jug, said in a howling voice: “Reveal the secret of the turtle Tortila!”

Karabas Barabas was scared. “Where is the door?” - Buratino howled. Frightened Karabas whispered that she was in old Carlo’s closet behind a canvas with a painted hearth. Then the fox Alice and the cat Basilio entered the tavern. The fox said that for ten gold coins she would give Pinocchio to Karabas Barabas, without leaving this place. He gave her the money, and the fox pointed his paw at the jug.

Karabas Barabas threw the jug on the floor, Pinocchio jumped out of the fragments of the jug and rushed out of the tavern.

When he ran to the cave, there was no one there. The Mole reported that Pinocchio's friends were captured by detectives and taken away by the Fox, the governor of the City of Fools. Pinocchio ran along the tracks of the wheels and went out into a field with thick grass, where there were no more tracks. I reached the steep bank of the pond.

And then he saw that a cart pulled by sheep was driving along the road to the pond. The Fox rode in it with his captives, and behind him were detectives - Doberman pinschers.

The detectives saw Buratino and galloped towards him, but he jumped into the pond. The wind picked it up and threw it on the head of the Fox, who rushed away out of fear and climbed into a badger hole. And Piero, Malvina and Artemon rolled off the cart into the burdocks.

The detectives rushed to the cart and, seeing that the governor had disappeared, ran to the City of Fools.

When Pinocchio and his friends walked along the slope, Karabas Barabas appeared at the top with Duremar, the fox Alice and the cat Basilio. Seeing the fugitives, Karabas Barabas began to beckon them with his finger. But they did not go to him, but began to mock him: Pierrot said offensive poems about Karabas and his companions, Malvina laughed, and Pinocchio teased.

Fox Alice wanted to grab the little men, but old Carlo came to the top of the slope with a stick in his hand. He pushed Karabas and Duremar away, hit the fox with a stick, and threw his boot at the cat. Then he looked down from the slope and called Pinocchio. He put the little men in his bosom, put the wounded Artemon on his shoulders and went to the town.

In the closet, Buratino asked Papa Carlo to tear the canvas off the wall. A door was revealed behind it. When Pinocchio opened it with a golden key, music began to play.

At that moment, the voice of Karabas Barabas was heard outside the window, demanding that the police arrest Carlo. When they broke down the door, they found no one in the closet - everyone went behind the secret door. Karabas Barabas rushed to the door, but could not open it and began to tear his beard out of anger.

At this time, Pinocchio, Pierrot, Malvina, Artemon and Papa Carlo were going down the stairs to the dungeon. They entered a hole in the wall from which blue light poured. There they saw a room in the middle of which stood a puppet theater.

Papa Carlo wound up the clock on the turret of this theater, and then a wonderful performance began. Birds sang, African animals walked, then scenes of city life were shown, and it was all very small and beautiful.

Buratino said that in this theater they could stage a comedy about the adventures of him and his friends. Everyone happily agreed to this.

But at the Karabas Barabas Theater things were going badly. The dolls were starving, the public did not want to watch boring plays.

Opposite his theater there was a tent where Pinocchio and his friends gave a performance.

The dolls of Karabas Barabas ran away from him to the Buratino theater. Karabas wanted to return them, but only managed to grab a toy dog. Artemon saved her by throwing Karabas into a puddle. He rushed off with her to the tent, where the hungry actors were treated to hot stew. And their former owner remained sitting in a puddle.

Differences between Pinocchio and The Golden Key

Despite the fact that Tolstoy’s work is a literary adaptation, it differs significantly from the original. The fairy tale “The Golden Key” came out kinder and more childish, while Collodi’s plot is more cruel.

Differences from the fairy tale "Pinocchio":

  • Fox instead of Alice the Fox;
  • instead of Malvina and Artemon - a fairy with a poodle Medoro;
  • no golden key;
  • the owner of the puppet theater is a positive character;
  • dolls are only puppets in the hands of their owner;
  • Pinocchio's nose grows from lies;
  • The action takes place over 1 thousand days.

We can say that the books came out completely different. The similarity is observed until the moment when two scammers dug up Pinocchio’s money. After this, the texts of the works diverge radically.

The tale of the “Golden Key” teaches you to distinguish bad from good and always achieve your goal despite any obstacles. The author says that to defeat evil, all good people must stick together.

Reader reviews

Everyone in our family loves to read, and recently my son also became interested in reading. The first book he mastered was the fairy tale about Pinocchio. A simple text, an interesting plot and fairy-tale characters attract readers from the first pages. I think that the work is much more interesting than a cartoon or film, and besides, it develops a child’s imagination.

One of my favorite books, the text is written in simple and lively language, which is easily understood even by very young children. A fascinating storyline, a large number of various adventures and events in which the hero constantly finds himself. Readers involuntarily begin to worry about the characters and dream with them. All this ensures the popularity of the fairy tale and makes it a bestseller.

A wonderful fairy tale with a good plot and interesting characters. This work is familiar to everyone since childhood; I also read the book at an early age, and recently introduced it to my daughter. She studied a summary of Pinocchio for a reader's diary and wrote an essay on the topic. She also really enjoyed the book, and the beautiful illustrations only made her want to read it to the end.
