A very brief retelling of the story “The Horse with the Pink Mane.”
Vitya is an orphan. His grandparents take care of him. Like many village boys from poor families, he dreams of a white gingerbread in the shape of a horse. One day he had the opportunity to get the treasured delicacy, but for this he needed to pick up a bunch of strawberries.
The boy got excited about this idea, but couldn’t stop in time while playing with the neighbor’s children. By evening, the required amount of berries was not collected. Then Vitya, following the “cunning” advice of one of his friends, collected grass and leaves into a basket, and poured a thin layer of berries on top.
The next day the grandmother took the basket to the city to sell. There she almost accidentally deceived a customer and therefore returned home angry. Vitya pretended to be asleep, but his conscience took over. He repented to his grandmother. Seeing that her grandson was sincere, the granny handed him the long-awaited treat - a white gingerbread in the shape of a horse with a pink mane.

I. Acquaintance with Vitya and the Levontiya family
After the death of his mother, Vitya is raised by his grandmother. She invites her grandson to go with Levontia’s guys to pick a berry. If Vitya picks a bunch of strawberries, then they can be sold in the city. There, the grandmother promises to buy him, as a gift for his work, the dream of all the children - a gingerbread in the shape of a horse. Such an acquisition will ensure the envy and respect of all the village children. Vitya is happy to agree.
According to the berry, he goes with the guys from the neighboring low-income and noisy family of Levontia, who works in logging. Money did not take root with these people: Levontii would receive a salary, throw a feast, his wife would pay off his debts, and after a couple of days they would run around borrowing again. But Vitya is pitied and loved in that family.
II. Berry picking
The guys went to pick strawberries. Vitya, inspired by his grandmother’s promise, quickly got to work. And the Levontyev guys were more fooling around, fighting and picking strawberries not in baskets, but in their mouths. Then they decided to go swimming, but noticing that Vitya had a berry left, they teased him and forced him to eat it. Having dealt with the prey, the guys ran away to the river together.
III. Deception and blackmail
Author: Viktor Petrovich Astafiev
Only in the evening did Vitya come to his senses. He was ashamed to return home without berries. Sanka, the eldest of the Levontievskys, suggested a “way out” - fill the box with grass, and sprinkle berries on top as if it were full. Vitya did just that.
At home, the grandmother did not realize the deception and praised her grandson for a long time. I put the decoy in the cold until the morning. Vitya ran outside and shared his worries with Sanka, and he demanded payment for silence - kalach. To prevent his friend from ratting him out, Vitya began secretly sneaking treats for the blackmailer from his house until he had his fill. Vitya then slept poorly all night, worried that he had deceived his grandmother, and even took the rolls without asking. At the end of the night, the boy decided that in the morning he should tell his grandmother everything.
IV. Pangs of conscience
But in the morning Vitya overslept. The grandmother with the decoy sailed on a boat to the city. And Vitya went fishing with Sanka. From the shore he saw a grandmother in a large boat, shaking her fist at him.
In the evening, Vitya lay down in the closet and began to remember his mother. Mom, just like grandmother, went to the city to sell berries. One day the boat capsized. Mom drowned.
V. Repentance and Forgiveness
In the morning my grandfather returned from the farm. He demanded that Vitya apologize to his grandmother. The grandmother has already told many people how her grandson let her down. Because of his forgery, she almost deceived the customer.
Vitya repented for a long time and tearfully of what he had done. Grandmother scolded him, but then fed him breakfast and gave him a gingerbread in the shape of a horse with a pink mane.
Among the significant characters in the story “The Horse with a Pink Mane” are the main characters: the orphan boy Vitya and his grandmother Katerina Petrovna, the secondary ones: Vitya’s grandfather, neighbor Levontii and his son Sanka.
