“The Parma Monastery” is one of the most famous works written by the famous French writer Stendhal.

The author portrays Fabrizio, the youngest son of Dongo, as the main character of the work. The father has the title of marquis and a decent fortune, but is very stingy. Fabrizio has two sisters and an older brother. The young man is beautifully built, slender and tall. The young man's main hobby is Napoleon. His passion is so strong that, having changed his name, Fabrizio enlists as a soldier in the imperial army. He even had to take part in the fighting at Waterloo. But Napoleon's army was defeated in the battle. The canteen recommends that the young man return to home, which he does. On the way, he learns from his sister's servant about his elder brother's denunciation. Fabrizio is wanted by the police as a conspirator.

The mother decides to save her son and takes him to another city in the hope of the protection of the rulers of the world. But he receives no help from them and faces imprisonment in one of the most terrible prisons in Europe. Fabrizio has to be in exile.

Our hero's sister's name is Gina. The girl is distinguished by her special beauty. She is in love with a married count - a minister, being married to an impoverished nobleman. The Count is married, but because of his love for Gina, he is ready to leave his wife and live with a young beauty. A fictitious marriage allows Gina to live in Parma and become close to the court. Very soon the girl charms everyone around her with her beauty and intelligence. Her house in Parma is extremely popular.

But, as always, in the relations of the nobility there are contradictions and enmity. At the king's court, two parties are at war. One of the parties is led by a count, the second is controlled by an opposition rich woman. Each of the leaders skillfully adapts to the ruling prince.

Gina is delighted with her new life. She shares a certain attachment with the Count. Life in the court world gives her pleasure. But she does not stop thinking about the fate of her brother. According to the count, after being in Napoleon's army, Fabrizio would not be able to continue his military career. After a certain period of time, the count will be able to help the young man become an archbishop in Parma, if he does not object. To realize these plans, the sister sends her brother to the theological academy to study theology. Three years of study are not in vain, and having successfully passed the exams, the hero of the novel ends up in Parma. His sister provides him with a home at her place.

At one of the theatrical performances, a young man falls in love with a beautiful actress. The girl is being looked after by a patron. Due to jealousy, he is able to kill Fabrizio. Their inevitable meeting took place. The rivals sort things out in a fight, in which the actress's patron dies from Fabrizio's sword. Because of this death, the young man again has to hide, and he goes on the run. In Bologna, he meets his beloved actress.

The prince is not happy with the duchess's behavior. To humiliate Gina, he orders Fabrizio to be caught and a trial to begin, after which the young man could be sent to hard labor or executed.

Having learned about this, Gina herself goes to negotiations with the prince and is ready to leave the city herself, since she did not trust the monarch. Fearing the spread of rumors, the prince agrees not to punish Fabrizio, but very soon changes his mind. Fabrizio is imprisoned in the fortress. In the fortress, a young man falls in love with the commandant's daughter. The lovers manage to communicate secretly in prison conditions. With the help of the girl, Fabrizio manages to escape from the fortress.

The government changes in the country, the fugitive returns and is acquitted by the court. After some time, he was awarded the religious rank of archbishop. Francisco's beloved, fulfilling her father's will, marries another man, but they meet secretly. Soon the girl’s child and she herself die. Fabrizio goes to a monastery and dies there.
