- Baby and Carlson, who lives on the roof
The work “The Kid and Carlson, Who Lives on the Roof,” written by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren, is part of a trilogy of fairy tales about a boy and his unusual friend.
In a Stockholm apartment building lived an unremarkable Swedish family, the Svantesons, consisting of five people: mom, dad and children (fifteen-year-old teenager Bosse, fourteen-year-old Bethan and seven-year-old Svante, nicknamed Baby). His parents are constantly busy with things, and his older brother and sister have their own interests, so Svante feels lonely in the family and dreams of having a dog. He even makes several unsuccessful attempts to bring a puppy from the street. But all these dogs have owners.
And then one day Carlson appears in the boy’s room - a cheerful little and fat man who can fly with the help of a propeller on his back. His home is as unusual as Carlson himself. It is located on the roof.
After meeting Carlson, the Kid’s life turns into a series of unforgettable adventures. For some time, the boy comes to terms with the impossibility of finding a real dog. Carlson loves to eat sweets, and the Kid constantly has to give his sweets to his friend. But this does not burden the boy; he is ready to share everything with a true comrade. And the cheerful little man endlessly misbehaves and drags the Kid into his tricks. First, Carlson blows up the boy's steam engine, scaring all the people in the apartment. But he persuades the baby not to be upset about this. Then the boy, together with Carlson, ruins his sister's date. The ugly people climb under the blanket and make their way into the dark room where Bethan and her boyfriend are sitting. At the most inopportune moment, the naughty people turn on the flashlight and run away. One day, Carlson and Baby visit the home of a cheerful little man and take a walk on the roof of a multi-story building. The boy's parents have to call a fire truck with long ladders to lower their son to the ground. Another time, a flying man disguises himself as a ghost and scares thieves who have broken into the Swanthesons' apartment.
Carlson does not want to show himself to other members of the Kid’s family, despite the fact that the boy makes several attempts to organize their meeting. Only at Baby’s birthday did the parents and brother and sister see a cheerful little man with a propeller. The kid decided that it was the most wonderful birthday. Firstly, mom prepared many delicious dishes that both the birthday boy and his guests enjoyed. Secondly, Carlson arrived and met all the family members. Thirdly, the parents bought a puppy for the Baby. It was the most wonderful and long-awaited gift! The kid hoped that the animal would help him survive the long separation from Carlson. After all, the boy went to his grandmother for the entire summer holidays.
The work of the Swedish writer teaches you to find joy in everyday communication with friends and loved ones, and not to dwell on unattainable desires.

Plot
In the city of Stockholm, a seven-year-old boy named Baby lived with his parents, older brother Bosse and sister Bethan. One evening, the Kid heard a strange buzzing, and soon a small plump man appeared in front of him, flying. It was Carlson, who lived on the roof. He met the Kid and offered his friendship. The boy happily agreed, and from that moment his life changed completely.
Carlson turned out to be an incredibly cheerful and inventive friend who was always coming up with different games and fun. The first thing he decided to do was start a steam engine. At the same time, Carlson spilled denatured alcohol, which soon caught fire. The friends managed to put out the flames, but left unsightly stains on the shelf. Carlson said that this was nothing, an everyday matter, and began to start the car. However, it exploded, Carlson hastened to hide, and the Kid got a hard time from his parents, who, of course, did not believe in the existence of the flying man.
Carlson invited his new friend to visit him, and together they flew to the roof, where there was a small cozy house. They had a wonderful time making Sweet Powder from all sorts of sweets and running across the rooftops. Carlson invited the Kid to have fun and showed him the swindlers at work. When the thieves were distracted for a moment, Carlson rushed into the apartment and hid the valuables they had stolen. They began to suspect each other of deception, and a fight broke out between them. Satisfied friends returned to their roof, and by that time there was already a fire truck in front of the house - the Kid’s parents were knocked off their feet in search of their son and were very happy when he was lowered from the roof to the ground.
The Kid and Carlson got into funny stories more than once, but the Kid was not completely happy - he passionately dreamed of a puppy, but his parents refused to get a dog. When Baby's eighth birthday arrived, his dream came true, and his dad gave him a puppy, Bimbo. This day became the best day in the Kid’s life - now he had a real friend and a dog.

Review
Carlson, although an adult, remained at heart a cheerful, restless child with an inexhaustible imagination. It’s no wonder that the Kid became so attached to him – you simply couldn’t find a better friend for a seven-year-old boy!
What I liked
I really liked that for his birthday the Kid received as a gift the puppy she had dreamed of for so long. It’s good that his parents understood how important this was for him and agreed to get a dog.
Conclusion and my opinion
This is a very kind fairy tale, it teaches children to value true friendship and make sacrifices for a friend. Carlson is a big prankster and his jokes are not always to the taste of adults, but for children he is a wonderful friend who opens up new horizons of communication for them.
Proverbs
- It is a great merit to help a friend out in trouble.
- You can't buy a friend with money.
- Get lost yourself and help your comrades.
Review
At first glance, it may seem that Carlson is a narcissistic, selfish, and also greedy person. But in fact, he is the best friend with a big, kind heart. It was thanks to him that the Kid stopped feeling lonely and unwanted.

Carlson has arrived again
In the fall, Svante returned to his city apartment. His mother became very ill, and the doctor ordered her to rest as much as possible. For this reason, it was decided to invite a housekeeper. The choice fell on a very strict woman - Miss Bok.
The kid could not find a common language with her for a long time, and Carlson came to his aid . The flying man began to play even more pranks, for this reason the housekeeper thought that a ghost had settled in the apartment.
Fortunately, after a while my mother returned, and Miss Bok went to television, as she was a talented cook.
More hooliganism
A year later, the Svanteson family wanted to travel around the world. The kid changed his mind after he accidentally saw an article in the newspaper about the search for an “unknown flying barrel.” They promised a good reward for his capture. The boy immediately realized that the article was talking about his friend Carlson, and began to worry about him . Thus, the Kid remained at home with the housekeeper and Uncle Julius.
At this time, two swindlers Rulle and Fille wanted to find the flying man in order to receive the promised reward for him. The kid and his friends managed to deceive the criminals. After that, Carlson decided to go to the newspaper editorial office and tell everything about himself. For this he was given 10 thousand crowns.
By that time, Baby’s uncle had fallen in love with Miss Bok and invited the woman to become his wife. In honor of the occasion, the newlyweds decided to have a fun celebration.
