The main character of the work is the lyrical hero, who lived for a long time in another country, who decided, after many years of absence, to see his native places and visit his elderly sick mother.
Coming out of the train car, a man hears a sad German song by a little girl, which evokes nostalgic notes in his soul and he begins to hum a cheerful tune.
At the customs post, the hero undergoes a thorough check of his luggage to search for prohibited literature, but he understands that the claims of the customs officers are groundless, since seditious thoughts exist only in his head.
The first city on his way home is Aachen, where an ancient cathedral with the ashes of Charlemagne resting in it rises. However, the city evokes feelings of melancholy and melancholy in the hero. Even the appearance of a well-drilled Prussian military man demonstrates stagnation, since he has not changed at all over the many years of the man’s absence from his homeland.
In the evening, the hero arrives on Cologne soil, where he takes a night walk through the city, in which many representatives of the great German nationality died in ancient times. The hero falls asleep, feeling the naive dreaminess inherent in the Germans.
The next destination is Hagen, where the hero enjoys a tasty and satisfying meal of traditional German dishes. Then, using the services of a mail coach, the journey continues along the road running through the Teutoburg Forest, famous for the battle of the German prince with representatives of the Romans. The carriage suddenly breaks down and the hero has to spend the night in the forest, surrounded by a wolf pack that fights all night.
The next morning the man arrives in the next German city, famous for its attractions. The hero takes a leisurely walk around Hanover, admiring the cleanliness of the town where the elderly king lives.
Finally, the hero reaches his native Hamburg and meets his beloved mother, who is happy to see her son after a long separation. The man looks with interest at the city that has changed after the fire, where many buildings no longer exist, and understands that life does not stand still, but moves forward. In the hero’s awareness, thoughts appear about the birth of a new young generation, characterized by freedom of mind and soul, an immeasurable loving heart, burning in the form of a flame.
